Forensics Camp

For children currently in Grade 4 through age 12

Roeper is offering a unique mixed-age Forensic Camp for campers in grade 4 through age 12. This camp is an introductory version of Forensics.

Campers spend the morning participating in Forensics Camp and the afternoon is filled with the same activity choices as Activity Camp.

Just to clear up the most commonly asked question, this is an ACTING camp, not a crime scene investigation camp. At FORENSICS CAMP, a two-week long program, students currently in grade 4 through age 12, use plays, stories, poems, or their writing to focus on the details of performance and public speaking. Students can perform a solo piece, with a partner, or in a group performance. Participants play with different techniques that address line interpretation, character development, stage fright, body language, improvisational theater, and finding ways to connect with their own emotions and with their audience through the words of their piece. Students will be working with one of the top forensics coaches in the state of Michigan. At the end of the session, students will have a performance for their parents and invited guests.

Forensics Camp is only offered session 3

Forensics Camp is led by Roeper teacher, Dan Jacobs. Dan has taught science fiction and fantasy literature, forensics, debate and a myriad of other classes at The Roeper School for over 25 years and more than 34 years of coaching experience. He is the Head Coach for speech activities at Roeper, including Lincoln-Douglas Debate, High School Forensics and Middle School Forensics. In June 2022, Dan was inducted into the Michigan Speech Coaches Hall of Fame in a ceremony at The Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island. Click to read more about Dan’s accomplishments as a coach!

Why Dan Jacobs loves being a Forensics coach “… It's rewarding to watch some of these folks grow from 11-year-olds into coaches in their own right -- and to feel the growth inside myself from being immersed in a seemingly endless process of creativity and discovery… forensics and debate give students the ideal low-stakes spaces for trying on a variety of viewpoints and exploring different ways to articulate what they're most passionate about.  I have yet to find a better venue for inspiring self-motivated learning where students feel the intrinsic value of critical thinking and self-expression. “
