NEW - Science Camps - unique camps each session

For children currently in grade 2 through 12 years of age

Roeper offers unique mixed-age Science Camps to encourage inquiry and exploration of our physical world. Campers spend the morning participating in Science Camp and the afternoon is filled with the same activity choices as Activity Camp.

Science Camp is offered by Sosha Haynes - a Roeper Alum and teacher at the Roeper Lower School who has been teaching science for more than 20 years. She attended the University of Vermont and George Washington University. In the classroom, Sosha believes every student is a scientist. Tapping into their natural curiosity and linking the learning to a student's interest is key to getting everyone involved. Besides being a science teacher, Sosha is a mom of two Roeper Students. As a family, they enjoy exploring outside, reading, sports, and baking.

A different camp is offered each session

  • Forensic Science: session 1

Put on your detective hat and help solve some mysteries! In this class, we will look at how science can help solve all types of mysteries. Students will learn about some of the clues that forensic scientists use to solve a mystery -fingerprint matching, ink analysis, unknown substance identification and more will be explored.

  • Simple Machines and Building: session 2

We will learn about the science and history of the 6 types of simple machines. We will explore the way these machines have made life easier and the inventions that incorporate them. Kids will then have a chance to build and create their own inventions that use simple machines.

  • Reactions: session 3

We will learn about the signs of a chemical reaction to identify when a reaction has occurred. We will learn about reactions that occur around us every day. Kids will complete labs where they can observe reactions and create reactions that serve a purpose (move an object, create light).

  • Electric Circuits and Energy: session 4

We will explore the world of energy and circuits. We will learn about some of the many sources of energy including solar power, and wind power.  Students will get a chance to create circuits (both simple and complex). Kids will diagram the circuits to be able to explain how they work. They will then incorporate many of the elements we learn about into the circuits they create.
