Discover the magic of the theatre with Roeper

Lights, camera, action! Dive into the world of drama and fun this summer at Roeper Theatre Camp.

Join us on the Birmingham campus of The Roeper School for a summer of collaboration as we work together to build a memorable and rewarding experience. At Theatre Camp, kids will learn about theatre and develop their theatrical skills through improv games, rehearsals, set/costume design and construction, and performance. Theatre Camp sessions will offer workshops on the following subjects: Scene Work; Improvisation; Singing; Choreography; Design (set, costume, and lighting); Directing and Stage Management; and Writing for Theatre. Campers will find ways to express themselves through the many forms of theatre-making and discover what aspects inspire them most.

During the first session (weeks 1 and 2), campers will learn the processes for putting on a show, play games that will encourage the building of relationships, and work together to create a piece to perform during the second week of camp.

During the second session (weeks 3 through 6), campers will audition for and be cast in their roles for the final production. During these four weeks, campers will learn songs and choreography, create set and costume pieces, and rehearse for the final performances. Both the Primary and Junior casts will work together on the final show.

Campers may sign up for all six weeks of camp or choose either Session 1 (two weeks) or Session 2 (four weeks). Session 2 of Theater Camp aligns with Sessions 2 and 3 of Roeper Day Camp. There will be an evening performance on the last Thursday evening of each session.

Performance Dates:

  • Session 1, Thursday, July 3 - Cabaret Performance

  • Session 2, Thursday, July 31 - The Wizard of Oz: Youth Edition

We’ll be busy, but not too busy to participate in some activities at Roeper Summer Day Camp. For half of the days in each session, campers will be bussed to the Bloomfield Hills campus to participate in a choice of activities. During these periods, the campers can choose from all the fun camp activities including swimming, games in the gym, arts and crafts, science, and more. Campers will travel via the Roeper school bus every Tuesday and Friday and on the Wednesdays of weeks 1, 3, and 5.

Each group will be comprised of approximately 25 campers and two counselors. The Primary Group is for campers currently in grades 1-3. The Junior Group is for campers currently in grades 3-5. If your child is currently in grade 3, you can choose which age group you think would be a better fit for your child.

Kendra started her theatrical journey tagging along on rehearsals and tech days as her mother directed over 50 shows for Royal Oak Public Schools. Her first stage appearance was as Amarylis in the Music Man, and she can still play “Goodnight My Someone” on the piano. Since then, she received a Bachelor of Theater Arts from the University of Michigan and worked for Warner Bros in New York City. Kendra’s parents were both lifelong teachers and eventually, she decided to follow in their footsteps and acquired Masters Degrees in Early Childhood and Special Education. She is in her twelfth year as a Stage I (preschool) teacher at Roeper. Kendra has also worked at the Roeper Summer Day Camp as a group counselor and Head Lifeguard. Kendra is so excited to be heading back into the theater for another amazing summer with the best group of counselors and campers around!

MEET THE THEATRE CAMP DIRECTORS - KENDRA & GRACE

Grace learned how to read by doing theatre in southeast Michigan. Community theatre, competitive drama in high school, local professional theatre, and a recently acquired Bachelor of Arts in Drama and English have equipped her with the skills, experience, and excitement necessary to share the art form with young artists. She also hails from Cranbrook Theatre School as a former camper, counselor, and instructor! Grace considers herself an actor and director with a hearty dose of stage management experience; she thinks of theatre-making as a combination of being responsible enough to be organized and being brave enough to throw away the plan.
